The French soldiers who had taken position after the edges of the forest tried several times to get out in the plains, but each time they got without cover, they were shot by the machine guns that were firing at the will and the artillery shots. As for the Germans, they launched several assaults against the woods. Uselessly! The battle went on and on and the losses in men were terrible. Finally, the French soldiers obeyed the order of general retreat and they withdrew to Fays-les-Veneurs and Paliseul, leaving after them a battle field full of dead and injured soldiers.

The cemetry of Anloy reminds that about one thousand men fell there.
